My work is a series of oil paintings and silver gelatin prints (black and white photography) reflecting my attempt to convey the vast natural beauty of wilderness terrain. These images were derived from various excursions in the Adirondack high peak region, Alaska, as well as areas in and around the Southern Tier of New York. These hand made images are visually somber, devoid of reminders of our high tech, fast paced society. If manmade objects appear they are usually presented as being overtaken by the overpowering forces of nature. The people in these wilderness depictions are friends as well as an occasion al self-portrait. I try to portray them as small, temporary visitors surrounded by a much larger sphere. The style of these works is not unlike late nineteenth and early twentieth century artists. To achieve that effect I utilize traditional oil painting techniques and a 4x5 cherry woodfield view camera. I hold in high esteem artists such as Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, and Ansel Adams.
I am a native of Corning, New York and have resided in Elmira since 1973. I am a graduate of Corning Community College 1972, Arizona State University 1974, and Elmira College 1978. I hold an M.S. Art Ed degree and have taught art, art history, and photography at Waverly High School in Waverly, New York since 1977. I have exhibited photographs and paintings at the Arnot Art Museum, 171 Cedar Gallery, and Gmeiner Art Center, as well as work in private collections here and abroad.
